The ECP Pilot was composed of four six-week courses, ran in parallel: one for university students, two for English teachers, and the fourth for NGO workers. Classes lasted 1.5-2 hrs and were delivered to groups of 10-12 individuals. The ECP Pilot was hosted by the Telecentre.
Each of the three types of courses had a separate curriculum that we researched significantly to ensure its suitability to the course beneficiaries.
The ECP Pilots were completed in June 2010. An initial information session was held for each course, in each case attended at full capacity (25 attendees). It was followed by an interview of applicants. The courses were oversubscribed and the one addressed to students received enthusiastic local press coverage (please see here for a translation).
In addition, ahead of the start of the ECP Pilot for English Teachers, we ran a three-day Teacher Training Programme (TTP) for the successful candidates (in total, 21 participants) in conjunction with the British Council. We received very positive feedback.
The ECP Pilots were run at cost, which when charged back to the participants equated to a nominal fee. Over forty individuals benefitted from the ECP Pilots and the TTP. We are now in the process of consolidating and assessing the materials designed for each course, in light of the feedback received from the course participants and with the assistance of experts in teaching English as a foreign language. The initial output will be a set of lessons learnt translating to a refined curriculum and a set of guidelines for future course facilitators.
Looking ahead, we are keen to hear from volunteers interested in facilitating ECP courses: please see the Support Us page for further information; or you can support the ECP financially:
